Scripture:

“And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city... And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.” — Revelation 21:15,18

Devotion:

Revelation 21:15–21 gives the Apostle John his license to vision the New Jerusalem—a city built not with human hands but by the very hand of God. The description captures the splendor and richness of imagery: golden streets, foundations with precious stones, gates made of pearls, and walls of jasper. These images are not made to attract but to show the perfection and purity of God's eternal abode among His people.

This is more than just divine architecture—it is a message of hope. Every dimension, gem, and sparkling surface seeks to point to God's glory and to the inheritance that awaits those who love Him. It reminds us once again that this world is not home. The place we're after has no pain, injustice, or defilement but is one in which God Himself provides the illumination.

The "gold like unto clear glass" brass bound in that place shows purity and holiness. Whereas earthly gold can have its impurities and become tarnished and dull, heavenly gold is transparent—symbolizing the clarity, righteousness, and perfection of the life to come. The foundations with the twelve precious stones reflect the fullness and richness of God's beauty. The twelve gates and their foundations, composed of a single pearl, bespeak the costly nature of the grace that opened the way to the city of Jesus Christ, the Lamb that was slain for the same.

And this vision about all these things must stir your heart because they raise your gaze from today's slight miseries to this eternal joy that awaits. Let such a glimpse of glory resuscitate your hopes and remind you of the rewards of faithfulness.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven,  Thank You for the promise of the New Jerusalem and the beauty You have prepared for Your people. Let this vision of glory remind me of Your faithfulness and the eternal hope I have in Christ. Help me to live each day with Heaven in view, holding loosely to the things of this world and clinging tightly to You. Keep my heart pure, my faith strong, and my eyes fixed on that city where You dwell.
In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
