Romans 16:17–18: "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

The Apostle Paul, in Romans 16:17-18, clearly appeals to the believers in Rome and to us today. This passage addresses the need for vigilance against those who seek to divide the church and lead others astray from sound doctrine.

  1. Watch Out for Divisions: Paul begins by urging believers to "watch out" for those who cause divisions. Divisiveness within the church can weaken the unity and disrupt the body of believers. We are called to be peacemakers and strive for harmony in the community of faith.
  2. Obstacles to Sound Teaching: Paul warns against those who put "obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned." It's essential to uphold the sound, biblical doctrine we have received and to be aware of teachings that deviate from it.
  3. Guard Against Deception: Paul highlights the deceptive nature of such individuals who serve their desires, not the Lord. They may use "smooth talk and flattery" to lead astray the naive and unsuspecting. To guard against deception, we must be grounded in the Word of God and discerning in our faith.

In today's world, many voices and teachings can lead us astray. As believers, it is our responsibility to discern the teachings we encounter, testing them against the Word of God. We should be cautious not to follow those who sow division or promote teachings contrary to the Bible.

Ultimately, our focus should be serving the Lord and upholding the truth of His Word. By being vigilant and discerning, we can protect the unity of the body of Christ and continue to grow in our understanding of God's teachings. We should also be diligent in prayer, seeking God's guidance and wisdom to navigate the complexities of today's world and remain firmly anchored in His truth.
