Growing Up In Christ!

Devotion by Pastor Shane - August 16, 2024

Scripture:  Ephesians 4:15–24, "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

Devotion: In this passage, the Apostle Paul emphasizes the transformation that occurs when we accept Christ into our lives. He calls us to maturity, urging believers to grow in love and unity as part of the body of Christ. The metaphor of the body, where each part has its role and function, illustrates how we are interconnected and how our growth impacts one another.

Paul contrasts the new life in Christ with the old, urging us to shed our former selves characterized by futile thinking and separation from God. This invitation to "put off" the old self and "put on" the new is an ongoing process of renewal that requires intentionality. It invites us to reflect on our thoughts, behaviors, and the influences that shape our lives.

The call to "speak the truth in love" is crucial in this growth process. It strengthens our relationships within the community of faith, encouraging honesty and accountability wrapped in love. As we grow and support one another in truth, we build a more vital, more vibrant church that reflects Christ's love for the world.

Prayer: Lord, I thank You for the new life I have in Christ. Help me to put off my old self and embrace the new self You have created in me. Teach me how to grow mature and love those around me truthfully and compassionately. Strengthen the bonds within our community so that we may build each other up in love and unity, reflecting Your glory in all we do. Amen.

Conclusion: Take a moment to reflect on areas where you may be holding onto the old self. Consider what it would look like to truly "put on" the new self and walk in righteousness and holiness. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in your journey toward spiritual maturity and fostering loving relationships within your community.
