Scripture:
“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;”
— Proverbs 2:1–4
Devotion:
Wisdom does not fall into people's laps. The first verse in the second chapter of Proverbs confirms this idea. Like a father talking to his son, Solomon urges us to pursue wisdom with the same energy and effort one would use to dig up precious hidden treasure. This is an urgent prayer.
Note the action verbs that describe pursuing wisdom: *receive, hide, incline, apply, cry, lift, seek, search.* These verbs signify hunger and persistence. God does not conceal wisdom to leave us searching hungry; He conceals it to attract us to Himself in the quest for wisdom. He wants us to desire the truth, to lean in and listen, to dig deep—not because He is far away, but because wisdom is holy.
We pursue many things in the world—success, recognition, comfort— but wisdom, according to the Bible, is more important than gold and silver (Proverbs 3:13-15). And the beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord. Deep reverential cherishing of both relationship and words. (Proverbs 1:7).
So let us treat God's Word today as a map leading us to the greatest treasure, not for our own enjoyment but for the sake of knowing Him more through each door of deeper understanding. May we continue to cry out for it, seek it daily, and cherish it as precious.
Prayer:
Lord, Give me a heart that hungers for Your wisdom more than the things of this world. Help me to receive Your Word with humility, to treasure Your commands, and to actively seek understanding like hidden treasure. Teach me to incline my ear, apply my heart, and cry out for knowledge—not just for answers, but for intimacy with You. May Your wisdom guide my thoughts, decisions, and path today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
