Devotion by Pastor Shane - April 4, 2025

Scripture: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:28–30

Devotion:

Heavy is life. You need to serve as much time in solitary thought as you need to struggle under false allegations by someone or try to keep life afloat in such unfunny ways. Experiencing profound fatigue in the deepest shadows of the soul, all know how being spent good gets with dismayed results. Yet Jesus, in Matthew 11:28–30, is extending a clear invitation to ones tired, among His own-"Come unto me."

But this does not ask us to be religious or to maybe start some rites—this is really a call for a relational stance. Jesus will not require us to change before we come but is calling, asking for dreams like us just because we are even more messed up, tired, or torn apart. And what is the promise? **"Rest."** Not only a physical kind of rest but a deeply foreign soul that needs Jesus's touch from above.

And He commanded all to take His yoke. When a yoke is upon us, something wooden that binds two animals in a pair to pull a load, we are not alone carrying it; instead, He lifts on with us, leads on in the way, teaches us, and gives us peace, peace the world doesn't offer.

"I am meek and lowly in heart"—His description of Himself. This means that, unlike the harsh demands of this world, we sometimes give in to or to ourselves; Jesus is an easier way. He's slower and more patient with us. He recognizes our scares, manages those weaknesses, and walks us through them.

His yoke is easy, not because life would be free from effort, but because fat grace lifts what guilt once crushed. His burden is light, not because every problem disappears, but because His presence turns struggles into strength.

Whatever burden you carry today, the Lord Jesus offers you this day. That should keep you whole!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your invitation to come and find rest in You. I confess that I am weary and often try to carry more than I should. Teach me to walk with You, to trust in Your gentle strength, and to rest in Your presence. Help me lay down every burden at Your feet and take up the yoke of grace. May I learn from You daily and find true peace in Your love. In Your holy name I pray.
Amen.
