Returning to Our First Love!

Scripture:

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” — Revelation 2:4 (KJV)

Devotion:

In the Book of Revelation, Jesus speaks to the church of Ephesus, commending the church on its deeds, toil, and perseverance. Having acknowledged that they could not stand evil, Christ points out their biggest fault: they had left their first love. They could still serve and do ministry, not realizing their hearts had grown cold.

This should be a warning today. We could keep so many rituals and try to do good things—it means we come to church, serve in ministry, and attempt to live a good life—but not actually have any depth or personal love for Jesus. Rapidly, these spiritual duties may replace actual relationships.

Jesus asks not for our good acts but for our love, that love which we had once given Him. Pray for your excitement to be fulfilled in Him so that when you see that you are wandering, you will be able to run towards Him by prayer, worship, and meditating on His Word to feel warmth and energy for your love toward Him.

After losing the fire of loving Jesus in prior affection, get time today to reflect on that and beg God to give you the joy of salvation.

Prayer:

Father in heaven, forgive me if I have allowed my love for You to grow cold. Make me return to my first love, to seek You with all of my heart, and to love You with passion and devotion. Light the fire within me again so that my relationship with You can remain my greatest treasure. Amen.
