Scripture:  Galatians 3:1–14, "1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

Devotion: In this powerful passage, the Apostle Paul passionately addresses the Galatians, who were struggling with the temptation to revert to the old ways of the law after receiving the gospel's grace. His strong words—“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?”—indicates the urgency and importance of staying true to the message of Christ. Paul draws attention to the fact that their faith journey began with the pure grace of God through the Spirit, not through legalistic practices or human efforts.

Paul poses a crucial question: “Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?” This question underscores the foundation of our faith: it is not about what we can achieve through works but about believing in Jesus and His finished work on the cross. The Galatians had begun with a clear understanding of grace, witnessing the power of the Gospel in their lives, but they were now being misled into thinking they needed to earn God’s favor through adherence to the law.

Paul uses Abraham's example to illustrate that justification comes through faith. “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” This foundational truth reveals that God has always desired a relationship built on faith, not performance. As Paul reminds us, those who have faith are children of Abraham and heirs to God's promises.

Furthermore, Paul emphasizes that reliance on the law results in a curse because no one can uphold its demands perfectly. This sharp contrast highlights the gospel's beauty: "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law." Through His sacrifice, Jesus bore the consequences of our shortcomings, allowing us to receive the blessings of God through faith.

As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded of the importance of living in freedom through faith in Christ. It encourages us to examine our own lives—are there areas where we unintentionally rely on our achievements or striving rather than resting in God’s grace? The gospel continually calls us back to the heart of faith, where we receive God's Spirit, experience His blessings, and walk in His promise.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for the gift of faith that brings me into a relationship with You. Help me recognize areas where I may be trying to earn Your favor through my efforts instead of resting in Your grace. Remind me daily of the freedom I have in Christ and the promise of the Spirit that guides and empowers me. May I live out my faith boldly and reflect the love and truth of the gospel in my actions and words. In Jesus name. Amen!

Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your understanding of faith versus works. Are there specific areas where you feel pressured to perform or earn God's love in your life? Consider journaling your thoughts and bringing those concerns before God. How can you remind yourself to rely on faith, not performance, this week? Think about ways you share the freedom of faith with others who are burdened by the weight of legalism or performance expectations. What steps can you take to embody the message of grace in your daily interactions?
