Scripture:  Galatians 2:11–21, "11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. 12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. 13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. 14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."

Devotion:  In Galatians 2:11–21, we witness a powerful moment of confrontation where the Apostle Paul stands firm against Peter (Cephas) for compromising the gospel. This passage illustrates the importance of integrity in our faith and the necessity of remaining true to the message of grace.

Peter, initially embracing the inclusion of Gentile believers, withdraws from them upon the arrival of certain Jewish Christians. His actions inadvertently lead others, including Barnabas, into hypocrisy. This moment reveals the pressure of social influence and fear of judgment that can cause even the most steadfast to stray from the truth of the gospel. Paul's response teaches us that the principles of the gospel must take precedence over social norms or pressures. True fellowship in Christ transcends ethnic and cultural barriers, emphasizing that salvation is by faith alone, not by adhering to the law.

Paul's declaration that justification comes through faith in Jesus and not through works is a cornerstone of Christian belief. He reminds the Galatians—and us—of the futility of trying to earn righteousness through the law. It is through faith that we are justified, and this faith is rooted in the loving sacrifice of Christ. "I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" encapsulates the gospel's transformative power—our identity is now rooted in Christ, not in our past failures or cultural identities.

As believers, our lives should reflect this profound truth. We are called to live in the freedom that Christ provides, allowing His life to flow through us. This freedom isn't a license to sin, but rather an empowerment to live for God, demonstrating love and grace to those around us.

Prayer:  Lord, thank You for the gift of grace that brings true freedom from the law. Help me to remain steadfast in my faith, standing firm against the pressures to conform to societal expectations that contradict Your truth. May my life reflect the transformative power of Your presence, and may I boldly share the message of the gospel with others. Let me live each day knowing that Christ lives in me, guiding my actions and shaping my identity. Amen.

Reflection:  Reflect on areas in your life where you may feel pressured to conform or compromise your faith. Are there relationships or situations where you need to stand firm in the truth of the gospel? Consider journaling about the experiences you face and how you can embody the freedom found in Christ. Think about how you can encourage others to live in this same freedom and grace, ensuring that your actions point directly to the love and sacrifice of Jesus.
