Scripture:
1 Timothy 6:17–19 (KJV 1900)
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Devotion:
In this world, Paul advises barnyard people about their wealth in 1 Timothy 6:17-19. In 17, he instructs Timothy to command the rich of this world not to feel so proud but to set all their hopes on the uncertainty of riches from here and there, putting all their hopes in the Almighty who gives richly all for our happiness. It, therefore, indicates how short-lived earthly money is compared to the spiritual understanding given to us in our daily choices.
This is a trap that many fall into when they have money; therefore, Paul starts with this exhortation against haughtiness to show that it is one of the pitfalls that usually come hand in hand with having wealth. It can sometimes make people think they are secure when they have a lot so that they begin to boast about their money. But instead, he makes us see that God is our ultimate source of blessings. This is essential in instilling humility in us as well as gratitude to Him because nothing belongs to us by right since we were created by Him.
In addition, "good deeds and sharing with others" call on a Christian (verse 18) that reproduces images than volumes collected as representing their worth by another. Christians are naturally generous individuals; hence, they play God's role in life via sympathy and courteousness towards others in need. In so doing, one saves wealth for oneself when helping others; this act goes into one's heavenly account, thus transcending eternal life beyond our earthly existence.
Furthermore, Paul affirms that through doing good works and giving freely, we lay hold on "life indeed" (v19). This implies that our concept of wealth changes significantly—true riches involve leading a purposeful life for others and in accordance with His Kingdom interests. It serves as a powerful reminder that material possessions soon slip through our fingers but not relationships built or love shared. Our actions have the power to transform not only our lives but also the lives of those around us.
What does all this say about how we have conducted ourselves till now?' Have we considered that safety comes from having wealth or faith instead?' How possible is being more open-handed with one's resources?' Ponder over how investing in other peoples' lives would forever change those communities.' However, success means different things to different people: to the world at large, money; in church circles, though, success enacts itself in terms of loving service.
Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, we thank You for all the blessings in my life. Help me resist arrogance and not to depend on my property. Train me to be very selfless and share out every little thing I own. I pray that I may find joy in doing good deeds. In Jesus name, Amen.
