Scripture:
2 Corinthians 9:6–15
6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. 10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) 11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. 12 For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; 13 Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; 14 And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
Devotion:
Apostle Paul tackled The issue of receiving effectively in 2 Corinthians 9:6-15. He focuses on the principle of giving and discusses generosity's massive impact on both the giver and the receiver. To begin with, he quoted this famous saying: "He who so sparingly will also reap sparingly, And He who sows granter will also reap granter (v. 6)." In this metaphor, we learn how to offer our giving not just as a responsibility but willingly because we believe.
The heart's attitude is what matters most in this writing verse. Paul further explains, saying that your gifts should not be given under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver (v. 7). It is his character of giving, not forcing others into doing something they do not want to do, that he talks about. Giving like this highlights God's image as He gave His Only Son for our lives. When we remember that act, we also give joyfully, inspired by His example.
In verses 8-11, we find how blessing comes with being generous. Nevertheless, we read that Paul says God who is able will provide you with everything that you may need at all times so that you will always have more than enough for any good cause (v. 8). Hence this means that there is still more than just money when it comes to giving our time, talents as well as other resources too. We, therefore, not only bless ourselves through giving but also become blessings unto others by allowing them to benefit from what we have.
Moreover, Paul brings further giving to the community. In verse twelve, he notes that the offer of this service is not only caring for people's needs but also an overflowing expression of thanksgiving to God (Vs.12). By giving generously as a community, we become conduits through which God's grace flows within our societies. Generous acts may make individuals realize the goodness of God, which helps increase love and oneness among them, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
Finally, verses 14-15 explain what Paul means by true giving, which breeds gratitude. The receivers of our gifts give thanks to God, reflecting on His provision made through us (vs. 14). This is how we partake of divine grace from our benevolent heavens through His release of His salvation to man.
Reflection:
In conclusion, let’s critically reflect on our attitudes towards giving, honoring such powerful verses. Are you a person with a generous heart? Do you give freely from your possessions or is it with difficulty that this occurs to you? Remember, every little act counts. It has the power to transform not just the lives of people in dire need, but also to enable personal spiritual growth, instilling hope and optimism.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I am writing to thank you for everything you have done for me today. Let me live a life of generosity which shows your eternal love and compassion. Make me one that cheerfully gives out all my possessions through trust in your provision. For that reason, whatever I may do, may it bring honor unto thee while inspiring others to call upon thy name – In Jesus name, Amen.
