As Christians, we should pray for a certain wisdom to let our troubles be an opportunity for us. According to Brother James, this kind of wisdom can only come from God when we have a doubtful mind, which demonstrates a lack of confidence and typically describes a person who is divided between being self-centered and being God-centered.
James gives this analogy of a wave being tossed about, which really means to be driven and tossed between self and God. Sea waves are not stable as they go back and forth, driven by wind, and this is what happens in the mind of a person who doubts. The wavering of doubt can be revealed through an individual’s prayer life and everything they do. This is a mark that our relationship with God is unstable.
Anyone who doubts God or His word cannot say, “It is well” when the “sorrows like sea billows roll.” That rolling is all they know because they have never decided to trust God fully. AMEN!
James 1:5-8 reads: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways."
