Compassion!

Merriam Webster’s dictionary says compassion is: “a feeling of wanting to help someone sick, hungry, in trouble, etc.” The Hebrew and Greek words translated as “compassion” in the Bible mean “to have mercy, feel sympathy, and have pity.”

Ephesians 4:32 reads: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” As Christians, we ought to be kind to one another. To be compassionate, we must be willing to forgive one another, just as God, through Christ, has forgiven us.

Jesus said that the greatest commandment was to love God with all of your heart, mind, and strength, then He proceeded to tell, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:34-40). Anyone called to serve in any capacity in the ministry should display the attribute of being compassionate. The Bible clearly states that compassion is a quality of God and God’s people.

What are you compassionate about? Being compassionate is when you care enough about others and do for others without any selfish or worldly desires getting in the way. To be plain, being compassionate is having a servant’s heart that hurts others just as Jesus had. Jesus told us to be the “salt and light” of this earth. Are you compassionate enough to be like Jesus and help someone? Are you willing to sacrifice your joy, time, and daily activities and show compassion to those in need? Amen!
