Do you ever feel as though others are taking advantage of you? This is a common feeling among many Christians. I must admit that I have the heart to give to others continually, and the Bible teaches this concept in Luke chapter 6. However, the Lord has shown me that I need to discern when it comes to helping or giving to others.
Matthew 10:16 reads, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." So, we see the Bible teaches us to be wise in these situations. Some people expect others to do when they are not willing to do for themselves. The Bible reminds us of this when it says, "if a man will not work, he shall not eat." We are wrong to take advantage of others by expecting them to do something when we, in turn, are not willing to do the same ourselves.
We as Christians need to come to a point in our own individual lives and ask this question: "What does He want me to do?" God will give us the wisdom to discern situations as an opportunity or distraction. God can provide us with the guidance we need in any case, but we must take it to Him in prayer.
Psalm 145:9: "The LORD is good to all: And his tender merceis are over all his works."
