Scripture:
Matthew 5:14–16
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Devotion:
Jesus showed that those following Him are the light in this world—a compelling identity that serves a straightforward task with immense results. As far as we understand it, the most fundamental role of light is to shine undeniably—the darkness disappearing and the way clear. Believers become instruments with which light comes to the world- Christ's light of truth, love, and hope.
Because of its hill features, a city from afar is revealed. It will serve as a beacon for those traveling, helping them know which way to take or as an assurance that they are on track. In much the same way, those who are changed from within are evident, meant to be the visual examples of God's presence in this world. Others are affected almost without their knowledge when we live by faith. But at the same time, Jesus pointedly warned against covering the light.
It is not the covering of a lamp or hiding under a basket that should be done; it must be raised on a stand to provide light for all in the house. This means that we are not private people wishing our own faith will be kept secret, but they are the way that will shine bright and clear, boldly pointing out the way.
Jesus commanded that one should not shine one's light to proclaim the name for oneself but show God the Father. People have been able to notice the real God; everyone believes and always comes to God for the good deeds they have seen in us. The ultimate culmination of that effort would be to honor neither too much pride in us, God, nor in all of us.
Take a moment to think, "Have I been letting my light shine in daily life?" What areas have fear, busyness, or complacency quenched my testimony? Remember that your light is not your own; it comes from Christ, who has given you the grace and deliverance to shine brightly for His glory.
Prayer:
Father God, we thank You for calling us to be light in the world today. Enable us to walk with Your love and truth so that our words and deeds may so clearly reflect that others will know they are from You. May everything in us be removed that obscures the light that You have planted within us. Fill us with the strength to shine loudly in the places You have called us, so all might see You in us and glorify Your name. May our lives always yield the fullest glory to Your goodness and grace. In Jesus' name. Amen.
